To Facebook or not to Facebook…

Facebook

That is the question.

So I need everybody’s help on this one.  Up till now I’ve sort of avoided the online social networking thing.  It’s kind of a hard to turn a blind eye towards it though, since that’s what everybody is on while at UCCS.  Either there are some great resources for doing homework or there is much more than just having friends online.

Leave your reasons of why you love facebook in the comments… and if you convince me to get onto facebook, would you add me as a friend?  :)

UPDATE – Ok, so I joined up.  Look out facebook, Billy’s here.  Let’s see if this is really something worthwhile.

  1. If you have managed to survive thus far without it, I wouldn't recomment joining up. I am becoming more and more convinced that social networking sites are a malicious ploy to keep track of people, their actions, and to build searchable databases of people that can be easily used for devious deeds. For example, employers may investigate candidates online. China, sometimes checks up on people entering the country to make sure they don't have any kind of connection to missionary type groups.
If you do join a social networking site, keep a really low profile, and turn on all the security and privacy features they offer. Also, consider using a false name. If I can't post anonymously online and have to register, I use an alias complete with his own address (most sites just match state and zipcode fields to make sure you aren't lying) and a very variable IP address since he regularly browses through proxy servers. Anonymity is your biggest concern when it comes to social networking, but if you are willing to go through with it anyway, it can be a valuable tool for planning parties and chatting with friends.

  2. I think its important to remain anonymous to some degree. But I love Facebook haha. I'm on it quite a bit and it helps me keep in touch with people (since I moved), see their pictures, know about their relationships, and keep in contact with some individuals whose phone numbers I don't have. Also, it helps if you meet new people and didn't exchange numbers or anything you can get to know them through Facebook and see if you have any mutual friends or anything like that. I would get it, but only if you are going to use it and have friends or people on there worth staying in touch with. I think I have over 700 "friends" and I really personally could point out and tell you something about each one of them. I don't add anyone I don't know.
